REGIONAL VARIETAL TESTING AND GERMPLASM EXCHANGE

Improved germplasm is provided to all ECABREN countries by the network and is used for regional variety testing—the development of new bean varieties with various attributes (e.g. resistance to pests and diseases) which meet the needs of each national bean R&D programme. These improved bean varieties developed by others can be shared in the region. In this way benefit are shared across the region, with those NARS who are not yet running their own full-scale breeding programmes standing to benefit most of all.

Although South Africa is the only country in SABRN that has a breeding programme (and it released 1 new variety in 2006), three other countries in the network released an additional 8 high yielding disease resistant varieties through sharing and exchange of germplasm and nurseries; these include DR Congo (3), Mozambique (2), and Swaziland (3). In Southern DR Congo, three new high yielding varieties with tolerance to low soil fertility (Xan76, Dor715 and DB196) were released and South Africa released Sederberg, a high yielding variety resistant to angular leaf spot and rust.
